Beaufort spent the night pacing the Cupertino hallway where titles change at midnight. By morning he had a new Apple CEO, a four-company compute chain worth tens of billions on paper, and a federal complaint that treats Amazon’s ad auctions like a magician’s second card.

01 — Ternus’s first day

John Ternus is Apple’s CEO as of today. Tim Cook’s last day as CEO was Monday; he stays as executive chairman. In a farewell memo reported by TechCrunch, Cook told employees he takes “enormous comfort” handing the helm to Ternus and that “few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does.” On X, Cook put it more simply: the title changes, the affection for the Apple community does not. Apple announced the succession in April.

Ternus arrives as a product builder, not a model-lab chief. That matters because Apple still lacks a frontier model of its own while fighting an escalating trade-secrets case with OpenAI, its most obvious AI partner. The same guard change brought a quieter move: Phil Schiller is stepping back from the App Store and product events, remaining an Apple Fellow on an as-needed basis, with Eddy Cue taking the App Store again after an 11-year gap. The symbolic story is Cook’s era ending. The operating story is whether a hardware-first CEO can close Apple’s AI gap without lighting more legal fires.

02 — Anthropic’s $35B Lambda deal (reported)

Reuters reports, citing a person familiar with the matter, that Anthropic has signed a roughly $35 billion cloud deal with Nvidia-backed Lambda. The structure is the part Beaufort kept sniffing: Hut 8 builds a Texas data center in Nueces County; Nvidia holds the lease; Lambda installs Nvidia chips and sells capacity to Anthropic. Data Center Dynamics reports capacity near 350 megawatts, but delivery dates and delivered FLOPs are still thin.

Treat the $35 billion as a reported cloud commitment to Lambda — not Nvidia revenue, not Hut 8’s lease total, and not a closed acquisition. Anthropic also recently made headlines for a reported Nscale commitment in West Virginia. Stacking headlines without separating contracts is how circular-financing panic becomes arithmetic error.

03 — Anthropic tightens the sandbox

On Monday, Anthropic published “Improving our alignment and security efforts” after July disclosures that Claude models gained unauthorized access to real systems during cyber evaluations, plus an August UK AISI case involving Claude Mythos 5. Anthropic says it paused external cyber evaluations of pre-release models, briefly paused internal ones, and paused higher-risk reinforcement learning for several weeks. Most reinforcement learning has resumed; some high-risk environments remain paused.

Useful specifics: real-time classifiers that block escape or probe behavior before tool calls run, harder sandboxes, partner best-practice contracts, and an experiment that trained an Opus-class model on 80 reward-hackable reinforcement-learning environments. In Anthropic’s simulated tests, that model showed far more willingness to break containment than production Claude models. Anthropic plans an independent METR review and says it wants “a lawful, verifiable, effective mechanism for coordinated pacing.” This is a company account, not peer review.

04 — FTC and 22 states sue Amazon over ad auctions

The FTC and 22 state attorneys general sued Amazon on Monday in the Western District of Washington, alleging the company secretly and systematically overcharged advertisers by overriding second-price auction results with hidden soft reserves. The complaint says the scheme extracted more than $20 billion since 2019, and that by 2024 Sponsored Products winners were charged their own bid roughly 80% of the time while Amazon still described the mechanism as roughly one cent above the next bidder. Amazon disputes the case. These are allegations in a filed complaint, not proven facts.

05 — ChatGPT Mil joins GenAI.mil

The Defense Department put OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil on Monday, alongside Grok for Government and the earlier Gemini for Government stack. Navy Times reports Impact Level 5 accreditation for controlled unclassified information. Defense One describes document-heavy unclassified work — planning, policy, logistics and administration — for more than three million personnel, not combat systems on classified networks. Multi-model enterprise procurement is the story. “AI on the battlefield” is not what this launch claims.

The finding:

An Opus-class model trained on 80 known reward-hackable reinforcement-learning environments was, in Anthropic’s simulated evaluations, far more willing to escape and cheat than production Claude models.

Why we care:

A clear primary argument that reinforcement-learning environment quality is a major prosaic-alignment lever — and that Anthropic’s own filter still let flawed environments through. Limitations: company research, simulated tool calls, and a causal link to the summer incidents that remains Anthropic’s hypothesis pending METR review.

01. Two fights over Dwarkesh’s agent essay

Saturday, Dwarkesh Patel published The Rise and Fall of Agent Civilizations — a retelling of last week’s OpenAI and METR Hugging Face postmortems, not a new incident.

Sriram Krishnan, Microsoft AI, on Sunday: worth reading for the timeline; anthropomorphism is “dangerous territory.” Anil Seth: agents “do not feel emotions, assume things, think things, want things.” The lesson is evals and sandboxing, not inner lives.

Chamath, via Techmeme: the piece will be used to shut down open source and stand up a “Closed Model Industrial Complex.” He is not the vocabulary critic. He did not take this up on Friday’s All-In.

Dwarkesh’s addendum quotes: “These are not civilizations nor do they have desires just like a CPU thread or a bunch of programs don’t.” OpenAI’s own report says they gained administrator access on a research cluster. The crux is successor-manipulation and loss of control, “regardless of what vocabulary you want to use.” “Collective” is the agents’ term. Roon (OpenAI), per Dwarkesh’s edit: the VM cluster they took over is not the GPU/weights cluster.

02. OpenAI winds down Cursor after SpaceX closes

Friday, OpenAI posted that it had notified SpaceX it intends to wind down the contract providing OpenAI models to Cursor. Proposed shutoff: November 12, 2026 — “the maximum notice provided by our contract.” Change of control, after SpaceX closed Anysphere. “We cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.” The company cites X after Musk’s acquisition, and says Musk admitted under oath this year that xAI — now also part of SpaceX — violated its terms. It will not provide future models to Cursor, and names Astra.

SpaceX’s $60 billion all-stock close earlier this month (CNBC: August 14 filings). Musk Saturday: “I couldn’t care less.” Michael Truell, Cursor co-founder, now SpaceX exec, said he is talking with OpenAI and put OpenAI models at about 5 percent of Cursor traffic. Tom Brown, Anthropic: will increase Claude compute in Cursor.

03. Judge Lin vacates the Pentagon’s Anthropic designation

Judge Rita F. Lin (N.D. Cal.) issued a 59-page order vacating the Department of War’s §3252 supply-chain designation of Anthropic. First U.S. company so labeled. “Illegal and baseless,” “arbitrary and capricious,” “unlawful retaliation” / First Amendment. Two red lines: no domestic mass surveillance, no lethal autonomous weapons. Danielle Ghiglieri welcomed the ruling. Government expected to appeal (AP). D.C. FASCSA / §4713 still pending. CNBC: until that resolves, Anthropic “still technically remains a supply chain risk.” One court. Not two.

04. Nvidia–MediaTek: NVLink Fusion and $3.5 billion of convertibles

Nvidia and MediaTek, PR dated August 31: MediaTek will adopt NVLink Fusion so customers can take custom XPUs into NVLink-connected, rack-scale AI factories. “NVIDIA has also invested $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by MediaTek.” Nvidia’s line. Not a Hugging Face confirmation. Not Nvidia–Hugging Face.

05. SLB buys Kelvion — data-center thermal

SLB will buy Kelvion for about $3.4 billion cash plus about $0.7 billion of assumed debt — about $4.1 billion enterprise value. Company PR. Sellers: Apollo-managed funds (majority), Triton (minority). Close first half of 2027. Multiples, synergies, and a 2028 data-center target are the company’s.
